Junior Hundred

2022: Skills, Smiles & Sixes

Sunshine, soft-ball cricket and a park full of families. We took the Junior Hundred into the open at Kashmir Gardens (Darnall) — proper outdoor cricket with room to swing freely, no ceiling, and no limit on how far you could hit. Big shots sailed into cheering crowds, fielders raced the boundary, and the atmosphere felt more like a summer fair than a tournament.

With 8-a-side mixed teams (minimum three girls on the field) and a simple, fast format, the day stayed welcoming for newcomers and exciting for regulars. Every player had meaningful time with bat and ball, the games moved quickly, and the smiles said everything.

How the Day Unfolded

Four matches filled the afternoon, with families on the embankment and an ice-cream van doing laps between innings. Junior Hundred is cricket made simple: soft ball, clear boundaries and short innings so everyone stays involved. With eight fielders, there was always a chase, a throw and a back-up — perfect for learning the basics and building confidence.

Highlights

  • Everyone plays. Rolling subs and pairs batting kept touches high for every player.
  • Skills showed up in games. Crisper throws, louder calls and braver shots as the day went on.
  • Girls leading. With three girls minimum per side, we saw leg-spin, safe hands in the deep and great fielding energy throughout.

Next: champions Burngreave Juniors head to the Yorkshire Junior Hundred Finals at Park Avenue, Bradford, to meet winners from Bradford, Kirklees and Leeds — with a player Q&A and tickets to a live Hundred match at Headingley also in the mix. Big thanks to Yorkshire Cricket for making it possible.
