A summer hall full of energy

In partnership with Masjid Umar/ YMA, we hosted a five‑week All Stars & Dynamos summer camp at Concord Sports Centre. Thirty‑eight children registered, with Dynamos places snapped up within 48 hours. Sessions were delivered by ECB‑qualified coaches Jawad Akhtar and Banaras Ali, keeping activities playful, safe and progressive.

What we ran

All Stars (ages 5–8) introduced cricket through movement, throwing, striking and simple team games — every child involved, every minute. Dynamos (ages 8–11) built on that foundation with match‑style practice: batting orders, safe bowling actions, fielding roles and decision‑making under gentle time pressure. Free coloured kits, all equipment provided and a friendly atmosphere meant the focus stayed on learning and belonging.

What families said

“My child enjoyed it all — thank you so much. If possible, more in future!” — Parent of Dynamos participant
“He loved meeting new kids and trying everything.” — Parent of All Stars participant
“Coaches were fantastic— calm, clear & encouraging. Please run more here at Concord.” — Parent

Why it mattered

For many boys attending after madrasah or with friends from the local area, these afternoons became a highlight of the week: a safe, structured space to be active, make friends and feel part of a team. The combination of no‑cost access (thanks to the YCB & ECB bursary), local coaches and an indoor venue removed barriers and kept momentum through mixed summer weather.

Our coach’s view

“Week one you see shyness and guessing hands; by week five it’s high‑fives and little leaders helping their teammates. That new confidence is the real achievement.” — Jawad Akhtar, ECB Coach.

We want this to become an annual fixture. With ongoing support from the Yorkshire Cricket Board (YCB) and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), we can keep cricket affordable and accessible for families in inner‑city Sheffield. Working with local coaches, local children and community partners such as YMA / Masjid Umar, we’ll plan further school‑holiday blocks and grow pathways into weekly sessions across the city.

If you’re a Sheffield organisation — mosque, school, youth club or community group — and would like to host a programme, we’d love to talk. Please reach out and we’ll get something started.
